A British mother of four, Eman el-Shazly, 45, is being held in an Egyptian jail on what her family and lawyer describe as "trumped up charges" intended to pressure her activist sister into silence. Her husband, Zeesharn Moustapha, says security forces raided their family home in Cairo and warned her to make her sister stop criticising the Egyptian government online, before detaining her the following day. He has urged the British Government to intervene, saying her condition is deteriorating in custody.

Ms el-Shazly, from Handsworth Wood in Birmingham, had travelled to Cairo to care for her sick 68-year-old mother and support relatives already detained. Two of her brothers and one sister have also been arrested, and she remains in pre-trial detention accused of promoting a terrorist organisation on social media and spreading false information. Relatives who visited on 2 September described officers swearing at and shoving the family, and said Ms el-Shazly and her sister appeared malnourished and psychologically broken; her husband says he now fears travelling to Egypt himself.
