Feature: Box Art Brawl – Duel: Professor Layton And The Spectre’s Call

Nintendo Life · 1 hour ago

Nintendo Life's Box Art Brawl feature returns to compare regional box art for Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call (known as The Last Specter in North America), the first game in the series' prequel trilogy. The feature ties in with the recent announcement of a release date for The New World of Steam, and revisits a title notable for being Layton's final entry to use classic 2D visuals before the series moved to 3D on 3DS and Switch. The comparison highlights the differing design philosophies used by regional publishers when marketing the same game.

Only two covers were put up for comparison this time: the European design and a near-identical North American/Japanese version. The European cover is busier, featuring a central window of the shocked protagonists, spooky eyes looming above, puzzle screenshots, text and character headshots, while the North American and Japanese version enlarges the same hero artwork to show more of the Misthallery setting and the spectre's ghostly hands, at the expense of showing off puzzle imagery. The article notes a previous Box Art Brawl on Castlevania: Belmont's Curse saw a lopsided 81-19% result in favour of the European/Japanese cover.

  • Nintendo Life compares EU vs NA/Japan box art for Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call.
  • European cover is busier with puzzle screenshots and character art.
  • NA/Japan version shows more of the hero art and Misthallery setting.
