A federal judge has temporarily ordered the Trump administration to restore press credentials for CNN, Politico and MS NOW, blocking the administration’s ban on the outlets from White House grounds. The 14-day restraining order is a setback for Trump’s effort to punish media organisations over coverage he disliked, while the court considers the wider legal challenge.
U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly, a Trump appointee, issued the order after the outlets argued that the ban violated First Amendment press freedoms and Fifth Amendment due-process rights. More than four dozen media organisations supported ending the ban, including the Associated Press, Reuters, NPR, major broadcasters and the White House Correspondents’ Association; ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox News also suspended participation in a White House television pool in solidarity with CNN.
