South Carolina corrections officer Matrese Grant was dismissed and arrested after allegedly smuggling home-cooked food into the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center for inmates. The allegations have prompted an investigation, reflecting the facility’s strict policy against contraband because smuggled items could include weapons or other illegal goods.

Grant, who had worked as a sergeant shift supervisor for about four months, was reportedly seen on CCTV concealing items under a blanket on 7 September and placing them in a secure area for inmates to collect. She was suspended without pay on 11 September and arrested on 17 September on allegations of misconduct in office and furnishing contraband; she remained at the detention centre awaiting a bond hearing. Authorities said this was at least the third contraband-related arrest involving a facility worker since 2025, following other cases involving former food-services and corrections staff.
