## Key points

- Kuyt was due to face Liverpool as Fenerbahce’s interim manager.
- Fenerbahce announced Emre Belozoglu would replace him.
- The club were sixth after two consecutive league defeats.

## Summary

Dirk Kuyt was set to lead Fenerbahce against his former club Liverpool in the Champions League, describing the occasion as special. But the Turkish club announced late the previous night that Emre Belozoglu would replace him as manager, leaving Kuyt’s role uncertain and adding an unusual twist to the match.

Fenerbahce were sixth in the Turkish Super Lig after losing their last two league matches, including a home defeat by Goztepe. Belozoglu, a former Newcastle midfielder, had played for Fenerbahce in two spells and briefly served as interim manager in 2021, but was expected to take charge only after the Liverpool game.
