## Key points

- Fernandes has pledged to help United recover.
- Carrick will lead the side against Chelsea.
- United are 16th, one point above the drop zone.

## Summary

Bruno Fernandes has told Michael Carrick he is committed to helping Manchester United turn their season around, after the pair held talks to resolve tensions over Fernandes’s public criticism of the manager’s tactics. Carrick will remain in charge for Saturday’s match at Chelsea, and Fernandes is expected to return to the starting line-up.

The discussion followed Fernandes being dropped for United’s 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth after questioning the team’s decision not to press man-to-man. Carrick also received support from the squad at a meeting, but United have won only twice in 12 matches and sit 16th in the Premier League, one point above the relegation zone. Director of football Jason Wilcox has given Carrick more time, with Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann among possible successors if results do not improve.
