Fery into first ATP Tour final as opponent retires
Britain’s Arthur Fery has reached his first ATP Tour final after James Duckworth retired injured during their Winston-Salem Open semi-final. Fery was leading 6-4 2-1 when the Australian withdrew, and the result continues a rapid rise that has made the 24-year-old Britain’s number one player.
Fery is the first Briton to reach the final of the ATP 250 event and will face Peru’s Ignacio Buse, ranked 36th, in Saturday’s final. Fery has risen from outside the world’s top 100 eight weeks ago to a career-high 33rd after his Wimbledon semi-final run, and will next play 13th seed Lorenzo Musetti at the US Open.
