Fi Ultra pet tracker uses T-Mobile’s Starlink satellite service for coverage

Engadget · 2 hours ago

Fi has launched the Fi Ultra, a new dog tracker that uses T-Mobile's T-Satellite with Starlink service to keep tracking pets even when they roam beyond the reach of cell towers. This matters because it promises continuous location data anywhere in the US, including rural areas and remote backcountry, appealing to owners of adventurous dogs as well as anxious pet owners generally.

The device automatically switches from LTE to satellite when networks are unavailable, requiring no action from the owner. The main trade-off is battery life: because its GPS is always on, the Fi Ultra lasts only around two days per charge, compared with two weeks to three months for the older Fi Series 3+. It also offers a "callback" training system using sounds and vibrations, a "Lost Mode" for heightened tracking, a "Search Party" feature that enlists nearby Fi users, and forthcoming "Safe Zone" boundary alerts. It costs new members $199 for the tracker plus a $20 activation fee and a $189-a-year subscription, while existing members pay $299 and add it to their current plan.

  • Fi Ultra tracks dogs via Starlink satellite beyond cell tower range.
  • Always-on GPS cuts battery life to roughly two days.
  • Costs new members $199, plus $20 activation and $189 yearly.
