Campbell Petrie, a 50-year-old Police Scotland officer, has been convicted of nine charges of sexual and physical abuse against two women spanning from 2006 to 2022. The case has sparked fierce criticism after it emerged that Petrie was promoted to sergeant in 2022 despite being arrested in 2009, and only retired following a second arrest this week. The conviction comes amid heightened scrutiny of Police Scotland's vetting standards, particularly following the earlier case of officer Alan Greer, who died by suicide in May after being arrested for sex crimes.

The crimes included rape, coercive control and abuse of two women Petrie encountered through work and chance meetings. His victims reported controlling behaviour including weight criticism, monitoring their social media, isolation from friends, and threats of harm. Politicians from both the Scottish Conservatives and Labour have called for a full independent review to establish what was known about Petrie, when it was known, and why preventive action was not taken sooner, with concerns raised about whether the force is adequately protecting the public.
