Fifa sacking ‘deeply troubling’ – Uefa executive

BBC Sport · 2 hours ago

Fifa's dismissal of chief operating officer Kevin Lamour has been branded "deeply troubling" by Uefa vice-president Laura McAllister, who worked closely with him at European football's governing body. Lamour was sacked just over two weeks after publicly criticising Fifa president Gianni Infantino, claiming the organisation's administration had been "deceived" over a scheme to sell stakes in its competitions to private investors. The sacking deepens a rift between Fifa and Uefa at a sensitive time, with McAllister warning it undermines efforts to reform the governing body's culture.

Lamour's statement came shortly before Fifa abandoned the private-investment plan on 1 August, a day after senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro had also resigned amid pressure on Infantino. Uefa, alongside the Asian Football Confederation and Concacaf, has accused Fifa and Infantino of breaking trust "through deception", while the football associations of England, Wales, the Republic of Ireland and Scotland have all withdrawn support for Infantino ahead of his re-election bid in early 2027. McAllister praised Lamour as a "principled" and "courageous" leader whose removal weakens Fifa's administration.
