A Greek air force Phantom F-4 jet crashed north of Athens on Saturday during a low-altitude manoeuvre at an air show, killing both pilots on board. The crash occurred at Tanagra air force base in front of thousands of spectators, though no civilians were injured. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis offered condolences to the pilots' families, calling it a reminder of the daily risks faced by Greece's air force personnel, and the country's air force has declared three days of mourning.

The twin-seat jet had been airborne for less than three minutes before it struck the ground and burst into flames, according to an eyewitness who spoke to state broadcaster ERT. Video footage showed the aircraft breaking apart in mid-air, with a second fireball visible nearby. It took 11 water-dropping aircraft and helicopters alongside 85 firefighters to bring the resulting blaze under control, after which the pilots' bodies were recovered. The incident happened during the annual Athens Flying Week, prompting organisers to cancel the remainder of the event and evacuate the area; Cyprus's defence minister also passed on condolences to his Greek counterpart.
