## Key points

- Barnsley fisherman Bradley Townsend is first Brit killed fighting for Russia
- Enlisted in April with no military experience, killed by drone in Donetsk
- MP calls it "criminal"; friends cite his past struggles and "indoctrination"

## Summary

Bradley Townsend, a 33-year-old fisherman from Barnsley, has become the first known British national to die while fighting for Russia in Ukraine, killed by a drone strike in the eastern Donetsk region. He travelled to Russia in April 2026 with no prior military experience, saying he wanted to "repay the favour" to Donbas miners who had donated a month's wages to striking Yorkshire miners in the 1980s, and enlisted knowing he likely could never return home.

Fellow British fighters paid tribute on social media, including Ben Stimson, who said he had urged Townsend to reconsider but that he was "adamant" about fighting, and revealed Townsend's flat cap would be left on Ilkley Moor in his memory. Former security minister Tom Tugendhat condemned the decision as "unbelievably stupid" and "criminal", while acquaintances told LBC that Townsend had previously struggled with mental health and addiction issues and had been "indoctrinated" by those who exploited his vulnerability. Townsend, known by the callsign "Badger", is the first confirmed British death fighting for Russia since the conflict began in 2014.
