First Look: The Wandering Earth: The Last Full Moon
IGN has published a first look at The Wandering Earth: The Last Full Moon, a narrative-driven shooter based on the original novella by Hugo Award-winning author Liu Cixin, rather than the 2019 blockbuster film it inspired. The game is being developed by Studio Surgical Scalpels in partnership with Starry Dome, which holds the licensing rights, and has been made with Liu Cixin's direct blessing as a recognised extension of the story. Its significance lies in continuing the trend, sparked by the film's success, of Chinese science-fiction IP being taken seriously for major commercial and creative development.
The story follows humanity's 2,500-year "Wandering Earth Project" to fly the planet to Proxima Centauri before the sun engulfs it, focusing on the "Braking Era" in which the Moon must be destroyed, and the long-standing conflict between the Earth Faction and Spaceship Faction. Players take on the role of an engineer sent to the Moon who becomes caught up in an assault and a conspiracy tied to this rivalry. Surgical Scalpels, previously known for the zero-gravity shooter Boundary, won the project after a year-long proposal process with Starry Dome following an open developer call in 2024; development began after Chinese New Year and a playable multi-level demo already exists internally, promising lunar-surface combat, realistic physics and grounded gunplay.
- New shooter adapts Liu Cixin's original Wandering Earth novella, not the film.
- Made by Boundary studio Surgical Scalpels with Liu Cixin's blessing.
- Story centres on destroying the Moon and a factional conflict on Earth.
