The YMCA is facing renewed pressure from the American Parents Coalition (APC) to change its policies allowing transgender people to access sex-segregated locker rooms, sports teams and overnight accommodations based on gender identity. The coalition argues that because the YMCA accepts taxpayer funding, its rules should be brought into line with the US Supreme Court's recent interpretation of Title IX, which holds that the law's protections are rooted in biological sex. The dispute reflects a broader national debate over transgender participation in single-sex spaces and women's sports following the court's rulings.

In a letter sent this week to YMCA President and CEO Suzanne McCormick and the board of directors, the APC urged the organisation to revise its policies on sports, bathrooms, locker rooms and overnight accommodations. The demand follows the Supreme Court's 30 June decisions in West Virginia v. B.P.J. and Little v. Hecox, a 9-0 ruling that states can limit women's and girls' sports to biological females and that Title IX's use of the word "sex" refers to biological sex. The coalition notes that the YMCA operates around 2,600 locations nationwide and receives more than $600 million annually in government funding, and its executive director Alleigh Marré said the rulings should be "a wake-up call for every federally funded institution".
