## Key points

- Fine says Republicans failed to make voters feel they cared.
- His Florida margin rose from 14 to 19 points.
- He expects Republicans to spend two years on the defensive.

## Summary

Florida Republican congressman Randy Fine said the GOP’s national election losses reflected a failure to understand voters and convince them that the party cared about their concerns. He said Republicans would need to take responsibility as a team and prepare to defend their positions during what he expects to be a difficult two years under Democratic control of both chambers of Congress.

Fine said his own winning margin grew from 14 points in a special election to 19 points, which he credited to communicating clearly and focusing on constituent service, immigration and bringing money to his district. Republicans also held Florida’s governor’s mansion, Senate race and 20–8 advantage in the state’s US House delegation, while suffering heavy losses nationally; Fine identified immigration as a major issue in the coming political fights.
