## Key points

- DeSantis called the Republican midterm losses an “extinction-level event”.
- He said Florida was the only top-ten state to retain GOP control.
- He warned Republicans could take years to regain unified control in Washington.

## Summary

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called Republican losses in the midterm elections “close to an extinction-level event” in many parts of the country. He said the result reflected voters rejecting Republicans in Washington, rather than giving Democrats a mandate, and warned that the party’s national prospects could be damaged for years.

Republicans lost control of both chambers of Congress, while Florida elected Republican Byron Donalds to succeed DeSantis. DeSantis said Florida was the only one of the ten largest states expected to retain Republican control, and pointed to sweeping losses in Texas as a threat to the party’s political strength. He predicted Republicans may struggle to regain control of Congress for two, four, six or more years.
