Florida executed 72-year-old Daniel Owen Conahan Jr. on Thursday by lethal injection at Florida State Prison, making him the 15th person put to death in the state this year. Conahan was convicted of the 1996 kidnapping and strangling of Richard Allen Montgomery, whose mutilated remains were found in a wooded area of Charlotte County that came to be known for the so-called "Hog Trail Murders", where the remains of several other victims were also discovered.

Conahan was pronounced dead at 6:12pm, minutes after the lethal drugs began flowing at 6:01pm; he declined to make a final statement. Although never formally charged in the other deaths, investigators believed he was linked to at least a dozen killings of homeless men in the area, with a sheriff's office report concluding that victims found within a ten-mile radius were likely killed by the same person. Florida, under outgoing Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, has carried out more than half of the 25 executions recorded in the US so far this year.
