## Key points

- A Florida neighbour helped rescue people as floodwaters rose.
- Airboat teams evacuated residents from flooded homes.
- The clean-up began after waters receded.

## Summary

After heavy rain triggered severe flash flooding in Palm Bay, Florida, resident Rick Addante helped rescue elderly and disabled neighbours trapped in their homes. His actions, alongside local residents and Florida wildlife officers, helped people reach safety as the water rose rapidly.

An 80-year-old man recovering from heart surgery was evacuated with his dog after water reached his knees indoors; rescuers also helped a neighbour with ALS, his wife and daughter, and found other people trapped upstairs. Airboats operated by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission carried out rescues as streets flooded nearly to mailbox height. The water had receded by the next day, leaving residents to remove damaged flooring and carpets.
