A Florida woman, Melissa Payne, will not face criminal charges after fatally shooting Bart DiGuglielmo following a row over a parking space at a Walmart in North Lauderdale, with prosecutors ruling she was protected by the state's "Stand Your Ground" law. The Broward County State Attorney's Office said video evidence showed DiGuglielmo had threatened Payne and that prosecutors could not disprove she reasonably feared for her safety, meaning a conviction could not be secured at trial.

The confrontation began on 30 June 2026 when Payne and DiGuglielmo both tried to take the same parking bay; he initially drove off but returned moments later, threatening her and, according to witnesses, appearing visibly angry while gesturing with his keys. Payne, who was with her niece and infant daughter, exited her car with her phone in one hand and a gun in the other, repeatedly warning DiGuglielmo to stay away before shooting him in the abdomen as he continued to approach; he later died in hospital, and his death was ruled a homicide. Prosecutor Stephen Zaccor concluded that although the footage did not show Payne "in the right," Florida's law meant she was not obliged to retreat or wait to be attacked, provided her fear was reasonable, and no evidence disproved this.
