## Key points

- Sporting will pay Lyon a €5 million fee.
- Jorge Maciel takes charge of Lyon on an interim basis.

## Summary

Paulo Fonseca has left Olympique Lyonnais to become manager of Sporting, ending his spell at the French club after more than a year and a half. The move gives Sporting a new coach during the season, while Lyon must replace a manager who had led them to third place in Ligue 1.

The 53-year-old Portuguese succeeds Rui Borges, whose contract Sporting had begun discussions to terminate. Lyon said Sporting would pay a €5 million fee and expressed regret at the timing of Fonseca’s unexpected departure. Lyon assistant Jorge Maciel will take over on an interim basis; Sporting are third in Liga Portugal and sixth in the Champions League standings, while Lyon are 12th in the Europa League.
