## Key points

- *Penny Dreadful* ran for three seasons from 2014 to 2016.
- Hartnett’s Ethan Chandler evolves beyond a cowboy stereotype.
- The series has gained a cult following since its finale.

## Summary

The article argues that Josh Hartnett’s performance in the Gothic horror series *Penny Dreadful* deserves renewed attention, especially as his newer drama *Below* attracts viewers. The 2014–16 series ran for three seasons and built a cult following after ending its story deliberately, but it remains underrated, the article says.

Hartnett plays Ethan Chandler, an American sharpshooter who joins Vanessa Ives and Sir Malcolm Murray to pursue a dangerous creature and a missing girl. The character develops beyond a cowboy stereotype into a more complex reimagining of the Wolf Man, drawing on Native American history and Jack the Ripper lore; the series also features Eva Green, Billie Piper and Timothy Dalton.
