## Key points

- The 1953 *War of the Worlds* is free on YouTube.
- The film shifts Wells’ story to 1950s California.
- Its once-groundbreaking effects won an Oscar.

## Summary

The 1953 film adaptation of H.G. Wells’ *The War of the Worlds* is currently available to watch free on YouTube in a colourised version. The article presents it as an influential science-fiction classic and a striking alternative for Halloween viewing, especially after the poor reception of the 2025 adaptation.

Directed by Byron Haskin and starring Gene Barry and Ann Robinson, the 85-minute film moves the story from 1890s England to 1950s California. It follows physicist Clayton Forrester and local resident Sylvia as Martians arrive in cylinders and attack humanity; the film’s effects won an Oscar, though they may look dated to modern viewers.
