BBC Sport · 1 month ago

Former Afghanistan fast bowler Shapoor Zadran has died at the age of 38, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has announced. The left-armer, who had been receiving treatment for a rare immune condition in New Delhi, was one of the pioneering figures in the rise of Afghan cricket, and his death has prompted tributes from across the sport. He is perhaps best remembered for hitting the winning runs when Afghanistan secured their first-ever World Cup victory, defeating Scotland in 2015.

Zadran represented Afghanistan in 44 one-day internationals and 36 T20 matches between 2009 and 2020, taking a combined 80 wickets. His best bowling figures of 4-24 came on his ODI debut against the Netherlands in 2009. The ACB described him as a "foundation-laying" figure who served the game "with honour, courage, and pride", while former India coach and commentator Ravi Shastri called him "one of the main architects behind Afghanistan's rise in world cricket" and offered his condolences to Zadran's family and the wider Afghan cricket community.
