R. James Woolsey Jr., who served as US Director of Central Intelligence in the 1990s, has died aged 84. His wife, Conchita Sarnoff Woolsey, said he suffered a stroke, according to reports in The Washington Post and The New York Times, marking the loss of a prominent figure in American intelligence and foreign policy circles.

Woolsey led the CIA from 1993 to 1995 under President Bill Clinton and remained an influential voice on national security matters for decades afterwards. His wife indicated that his health had been declining in recent years, reportedly linked to so-called "Havana syndrome", the unexplained neurological condition that has affected numerous US officials and diplomats.
