## Key points

- Rivers says nothing is imminent about the NC State job.
- NC State donors are discussing funding to attract players.
- Rivers’s son is committed to join the Wolfpack next year.

## Summary

Philip Rivers has emerged as a serious possibility for the vacant head coach role at NC State, his alma mater, after Dave Doeren was fired. Rivers says there is “nothing imminent” and that he is focused on his current team, but the prospect matters because NC State is seeking a high-profile hire who could attract players, donors and fan interest.

NC State administrators and boosters have discussed how to raise the money needed to strengthen the programme’s name, image and likeness (NIL) efforts, and have sounded out Rivers’s representatives and potential donor support. Rivers has coached St. Michael Catholic in Alabama for six seasons and is preparing for the high school playoffs. His son Gunner, a quarterback, is committed to NC State and is due to enrol next year; the university is reportedly comfortable with Rivers being a first-time college head coach if he builds a strong staff.
