Former PGA Tour star Hunter Mahan shares his thoughts on controversial Good Good ad, fallout that followed

Fox News · 11 hours ago

Former PGA Tour star Hunter Mahan has weighed in on the fallout from a widely criticised advertisement made by YouTube golf channel Good Good in partnership with Callaway, saying the ad was ill-judged but that the backlash against Good Good has been excessive. The advert, promoting a new driver, showed Good Good co-founder Garrett Clark shoving a female member of the brand to the ground, prompting Callaway to delete it, apologise repeatedly and end its partnership with Good Good. Mahan's comments reflect a broader view within golf that, while the ad was poor judgement, the scale of the consequences for a brand still adjusting to life under major corporate and Tour sponsorship has been disproportionate.

Since the ad aired in late August, Callaway has severed ties with Good Good, the PGA Tour has confirmed Good Good's withdrawal as sponsor of its November event (listed as the Austin Championship), and retailers have pulled Good Good apparel from shelves. Callaway's chief executive, Chip Brewer, said the firm's "content review process was not comprehensive enough" despite having approved the ad beforehand, and announced it would strengthen approval procedures and commit $1 million to organisations combating violence against women. Mahan, a six-time Tour winner and former world number four, said Good Good likely underestimated the scrutiny that comes with partnering major brands like Callaway and the PGA Tour, though he described the fallout as "probably too severe."
