A former Thai MP, Chalong Reawraeng, allegedly shot dead a local Nonthaburi official before phoning in to a political commentator's YouTube livestream to confess to the killing, in a case that has shocked Thailand. The victim, Thongchai Yenprasert, a retired police colonel and president of the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organisation, died in hospital after being shot in the neck; his driver was also wounded. The incident comes amid heightened concern over gun violence in Thailand, which has the highest rate of gun ownership in South East Asia.

Chalong was arrested but was then permitted to hold a press conference at a police station, where he smoked a cigarette and claimed the shooting followed a personal dispute in which Thongchai, whom he called a "good friend", had become angry with him. He said he had not intended to shoot Thongchai but fired after the driver allegedly pointed a gun at him. Chalong had earlier phoned commentator Anchalee Paireerak mid-broadcast to reveal what he had done, prompting visible shock from her on camera. The killing follows just three days after a 14-year-old boy killed eight people and himself in Thailand's worst mass shooting since 2022, prompting Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to order stricter enforcement of gun laws and new police checkpoints.
