## Key points

- France expects up to 500,000 protesters at demonstrations.
- 70,000 police and gendarmes will be deployed.
- Orléans braces for rival political gatherings.

## Summary

France is preparing for nationwide demonstrations after last week’s protests over the cost of living turned violent, with looting, damage to shops and public buildings, and clashes with police. Intelligence officials warn that as many as half a million people could take part, raising concerns about further unrest and prompting some shopkeepers to board up their premises.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez says 70,000 police officers and gendarmes will be deployed, supported by helicopters, armoured vehicles and water cannons. Students, the CGT union and Yellow Vest activists are expected to join; marches are planned in Paris and Marseille, while protests are banned in several cities. In Orléans, up to 40,000 people are expected to protest against the National Rally’s conference, which anticipates 5,000 supporters on Saturday and 10,000 on Sunday.
