Fraternity organiser jailed for 60 days after student dies in hazing ritual

Daily Mail ·

Carter Eslick, 21, was sentenced to 60 days in jail for his role in a hazing ritual that led to the alcohol poisoning death of 18-year-old Northern Arizona University student Colin Daniel Martinez. The case has drawn attention to the dangers of fraternity hazing and the responsibility of those who organise or enable dangerous drinking.

Martinez was found unresponsive at an off-campus Delta Tau Delta house in Flagstaff on 31 January, with a reported blood-alcohol level of 0.425 per cent, five times the legal limit. Court documents say he and three others drank about 3.5 litres of vodka; a 911 call came roughly six hours after people searched for alcohol-poisoning symptoms. Eslick, who apologised and accepted responsibility for his part, must also complete three years of supervised probation and anti-hazing presentations, or could face up to 305 additional days in jail.
