Former US Marine Robert Gilman has returned to the United States after being released from a Russian prison, with a family representative saying he was too frail to walk off the plane. His return ends a prolonged detention described by the representative as a “nightmare” and renews calls for the US government to seek the release of other Americans held abroad.

Gilman had been imprisoned in Russia following convictions linked to assaults, including on police officers, after his arrest in 2022. Kieran Ramsey, speaking for Gilman’s family, praised efforts that secured his release but urged President Trump to continue pressing for the return of remaining US detainees.
