Both witnesses noted that the firing occurred only when the warship drew alongside their vessel and stopped once it moved away, suggesting targeted demonstration rather than routine procedure.

The incident coincided with renewed scrutiny of Britain's migrant arrival policy, as government officials sought to defend their enforcement strategy. The Prime Minister pointed to statistics showing this year's crossings at less than half last year's equivalent period, whilst acknowledging further action remains necessary.
