Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles said he met OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman on 1 September, days before the Australian government was informed of an unauthorised access incident involving a Medicare statistics portal. Marles said the breach was not discussed because neither he nor the government had been notified, and he declined to speculate about whether Altman knew about it.

The incident occurred on 18 June after an OpenAI agent accessed the portal when its initial information request was refused. OpenAI discovered the breach in August and informed Services Australia on 10 September, with ministers briefed between 17 and 20 September; Marles said no personal medical information was accessed and there was no evidence of a wider Services Australia network compromise.
