Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has come under fire after it emerged that Marrickville Golf Club, an institution with which he has a decades-long personal association, received a A$6million grant through a closed, non-competitive federal infrastructure programme. Critics say his combative response to the revelations, including attacks on the media and a defiant defence of his record as a local MP, has deepened rather than defused the controversy, particularly given Labor's history of condemning similar "pork barrelling" by the Coalition.

The club was reportedly the only golf club in the country invited to apply for the funding, after its management approached Albanese's office directly following an electoral boundary redistribution. Months later, Albanese personally announced the A$6million commitment, with the money later distributed through an invitation-only grants scheme for projects already selected by Labor; questions remain over who drew up the list of approved projects and what criteria were used. The row has been compounded by scrutiny of Albanese's undeclared honorary membership of the club, granted around 15 years ago, which he claims not to have known about despite reportedly attending events, taking lessons and walking his dog there for years, and being publicly identified as a member in a 2019 news report — echoing the case of Nationals Senator Bridget McKenzie, who resigned as Sports Minister over a similar undeclared gun club membership tied to a A$36,000 grant.
