Fury and Joshua Wembley bout hinges on late-night start for US viewers

BBC Sport · 1 day ago

Turki Alalshikh, the Saudi powerbroker coordinating the proposed all-British heavyweight bout between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, has said the fight will only be held at Wembley Stadium if London authorities agree to a later-than-usual start time. He wants to stage the contest in England while still catering to a global television audience, particularly in the United States, meaning viewership and timing could determine where the fight lands.

Alalshikh said he will hold talks with the Mayor of London and other stakeholders, and that hosting the bout in England depends on being granted a late-night slot; timed for American prime time, the main event could start as late as 04:00 GMT — echoing UFC 304 in Manchester in 2024, which began at 01:00 BST. Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn has insisted the signed agreement requires the fight to take place in the UK, though he acknowledged Alalshikh is footing an "extortionate" bill and any change would mean renegotiating. Both fighters have tune-ups later this month: Fury (37) faces Mariusz Wach in Thailand on 24 July, and Joshua (36) meets Kristian Prenga in Riyadh the following day.
