## Key points

- Gary Oldman says HBO's Harry Potter series will beat the films
- Reason: it follows the books far more closely, "word-for-word"
- New series debuts Christmas 2026 on HBO and HBO Max

## Summary

Gary Oldman, who played Sirius Black in the Harry Potter film series, has said HBO's forthcoming Harry Potter television adaptation will feel "more satisfying" than the original films because it will follow the books far more closely. In a new interview, Oldman explained that the movies had to compress the source material heavily, sacrificing character detail, whereas the TV format allows the story to be told "pretty much word-for-word." This matters for fans, as it suggests a fundamentally different, more faithful viewing experience than the beloved but necessarily condensed film series offered.

Oldman first joined the franchise in 2004's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and went on to reprise the role through cameos and appearances up to 2011's Deathly Hallows – Part 2. He praised the original films as a "phenomenon" unlikely to be repeated, giving credit to director Chris Columbus for casting and shaping the franchise's world. HBO's new series, starring Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter alongside John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu and Nick Frost, is set to debut at Christmas 2026 on HBO and stream on HBO Max.
