- Scandal previously threatened to derail his political career

## Summary

A new tell-all book has revived scrutiny of a cheating scandal involving California Governor Gavin Newsom, which nearly ended his political career when it first emerged during his time as Mayor of San Francisco. The affair caused significant controversy at the time and forced Newsom to publicly address it, and its resurfacing now comes as he faces renewed national attention amid speculation about his future political ambitions.

The scandal centred on an affair Newsom had with Ruby Rippey-Gibney, who was married to Alex Tourk, a close friend and his campaign manager, at the time the relationship took place. The revelations caused a major rift within Newsom's inner circle and prompted him to seek treatment for alcohol use, with the episode remaining one of the most damaging chapters of his early political career. The provided article text does not include further specifics from the new book's account.
