GENE HOGLAN Explains Why He ‘Never Had A Good Taste’ In His ‘Mouth’ About CHUCK SCHULDINER Documentary ‘Death By Metal’

In a new interview with the IMPACT Metal Channel, veteran extreme-metal drummer Gene Hoglan — who played on the DEATH albums "Individual Thought Patterns" (1993) and "Symbolic" (1995) — explained why he was left with a sour impression of the 2016 documentary "Death By Metal", which chronicled the life of DEATH frontman Chuck Schuldiner. Hoglan revealed that, on the morning of his filmed interview in Toronto, an unnamed person who was prominently featured in the film urged him and others to "throw Chuck under the bus" and share unflattering "dirt" stories, apparently to inject controversy into the project.

Hoglan said he refused, insisting he had no interest in mudslinging and preferred to "report the facts" as he saw them, and that the request coloured his whole interview. He suggested the individual concerned had been "mistakenly" associated with DEATH's various eras in the mid-2000s and that people were now realising the person should never have been involved. By contrast, Hoglan praised the 2025 eight-part Hulu docuseries "Into The Void: Life, Death & Heavy Metal", released last September, calling it a decent portrait of Schuldiner. "Death By Metal", written and directed by Canadian filmmaker Felipe Belalcazar, received a DVD release in July 2018 via MVD Visual, while "Into The Void" was created by Jason Eisner and Evan Husney, co-creators of Vice TV's most-watched series "Dark Side Of The Ring".
