## Summary

Irish middle-distance runner Ciara Mageean has died aged 34, after a career that included two Olympic appearances and a European 1500m title. Her determination and openness about her cancer diagnosis made her an inspiration to fellow athletes and others facing illness.

Mageean won European bronze in 2016, Commonwealth Games silver in 2022 and European gold in Rome in 2024, when she overtook Britain’s Georgia Bell and Jemma Reekie in the closing 100 metres. She also won Diamond League silver and set Irish records, and had hoped to compete at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 after injury ruled her out of Paris. She shared her cancer diagnosis publicly in May 2025.
