## Key points

- Gina Hinojosa has won Texas’s governor’s race.
- She is the first Democrat to do so since 1990.
- Her campaign centred on affordability and Abbott’s policies.

## Summary

Gina Hinojosa has defeated Republican Governor Greg Abbott, becoming the first Democrat to win a Texas gubernatorial election since 1990. Her campaign made the race competitive by linking Texans’ concerns about affordability and public services to what she described as corruption and the influence of wealthy donors.

Hinojosa focused on Abbott’s support for data centres and school voucher programmes, calling for a pause on data centre construction until new rules could be considered. She also avoided culture-war issues, arguing that a populist message about government accountability could appeal to voters across the state. Abbott had started his re-election bid with $100 million in campaign funds and had often outperformed other Republicans on the ballot.
