Two-year-old Janessa Martinez has died in hospital after allegedly being severely abused by her mother’s boyfriend in Harris County, Texas. The case has prompted criminal allegations against both adults, with prosecutors claiming her mother, Jazmin Cisneros, failed to report earlier abuse because she did not want her boyfriend to be jailed.

Cisneros, 28, and Gerardo Gonzalez, 29, reportedly took the unresponsive child to a petrol station in Spring on 6 August to seek help. Janessa died on Thursday after less than a week in hospital, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez; prosecutors said Cisneros knew about previous alleged abuse but did not alert authorities.
