The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has published its latest study on LGBTQ representation in film, finding that the proportion of "LGBTQ inclusive" releases has fallen for a third consecutive year. The organisation reports that such representation dropped to around 20% in 2025, its lowest level in the period covered, and warns that the industry risks alienating audiences who are seeking out inclusive stories.

According to the report, LGBTQ-inclusive films peaked at 28.5% in 2023 (100 of 350 films released in 2022), before falling to 27.3% for 2023 films, 23.6% in 2024, and 20.4% in 2025 (46 of 225 films). GLAAD noted that none of the 225 films released in 2025 featured a prominent transgender character, and that none of the 19 PG-and-under animated or family films contained LGBTQ characters, down from two of 26 the previous year. It called this "particularly concerning" given a Federal Communications Commission inquiry into possible warning labels for programming featuring transgender and nonbinary characters, while GLAAD chief executive Sarah Kate Ellis argued that inclusive films can be commercially successful, citing LGBTQ-inclusive horror films that recouped more than double their budgets.
