Gladys Knight has said she will reduce the number of live performances she gives as she moves into the “next stage” of her career and life. The 82-year-old singer plans to spend more time on projects with her husband and with her grandchildren, while indicating that she does not intend to retire completely. The announcement follows growing public concern about her recent on-stage appearances and health.

Knight has continued touring regularly, but reports said she relied heavily on backing singers and appeared disoriented during some shows, including a July Hollywood Bowl performance. Her husband, William McDowell, said she still wants to sing but has better and worse days, and that she has not been diagnosed with dementia although a medical evaluation is planned. Her son Shanga Hankerson has previously voiced concerns about possible dementia and urged that she should not continue touring in such circumstances.
