## Key points

- Schumer warned Trump of investigations and legal action.
- Jeffries emphasised affordability and possible bipartisan cooperation.
- Democrats gained at least seven Senate seats.

## Summary

After Democrats won back control of the Senate and House, Senate leader Chuck Schumer signalled a confrontational approach to President Donald Trump, warning of investigations, court action and legislation if Trump defies voters or the law. House leader Hakeem Jeffries struck a more measured tone, saying Democrats were open to bipartisan work on the cost of living and that he had heard no calls from his caucus for impeachment.

Schumer said Democrats would seek to end the war in Iran and pass affordability measures, while accusing Trump of corruption and warning Republicans against continuing to support him. Democrats gained at least seven Senate seats; the article gives no final total. Trump said he expected to get along with Democrats unless they were destructive, though the prospect of investigations and a possible third impeachment remains in view.
