Wednesday’s autumn equinox marked the point at which day and night were almost equal in length, signalling the end of summer and the start of autumn. From now until the spring equinox next March, nights will generally be longer than days across the UK and the wider Northern Hemisphere.

People gathered at sites including Glastonbury Tor and Stonehenge to observe the event, enjoying striking sunrises and sunsets. The equinox occurs when the Sun is directly above the equator, giving both hemispheres roughly equal sunlight; the Earth’s tilt then causes daylight to become unevenly distributed for the rest of the year.
