Google Assistant will stop working on Android phones and tablets, WearOS watches and some paired devices from 4 September, as the company completes its shift to the Gemini chatbot. Google has begun emailing affected users to warn them of the change, which it says could take a few weeks to roll out fully; once it reaches a device, Assistant will no longer be usable on it. The move marks the definitive end of Assistant on mobile after a longer-than-expected transition period, pushing remaining users towards Gemini.

The change applies to Android devices that meet Gemini's minimum specifications and are in regions where Gemini is available, along with compatible paired accessories such as headphones. Older or lower-spec phones are unaffected for now: those running Android 9 or earlier with under 2GB of RAM will keep a legacy version of Assistant for basic tasks, and Google TV, Google Home and smart displays see no changes at this stage. Assistant will also continue on cars with Google built-in, though not on vehicles using Android Auto projected from a phone. Users without Gemini can download it from the Play Store ahead of the cutover.
