Google is renaming its AI-powered note-taking app NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook, part of a push to weave the tool more tightly into Gemini and Google Search. The app will keep operating as a standalone product but will gain broader reach, including future access through Search's AI Mode chatbot feature, reflecting Google's wider strategy of pulling its various AI tools under the Gemini brand.

The app began life as Project Tailwind in May 2023 before its wider release later that year, and has since gained features letting users turn notes into AI-generated podcasts, narrated slideshows and short video clips, alongside recent integration with the Gemini app. Alongside the rebrand, Google is also rolling out a previously announced update letting Gemini Notebook connect to a secure cloud computer to write and run code, a feature already available to Google AI Ultra and Workspace business subscribers and due to reach Pro users on the web in the coming weeks.

NotebookLM is a Google tool that helps people work with their own documents and notes using artificial intelligence. Users can upload material such as reports, PDFs and web pages, then ask questions, create summaries or turn the information into formats including audio discussions and presentations.

Gemini is Google’s main brand for its AI assistants and underlying technology, used across products such as its chatbot and search features. Bringing NotebookLM under that name is part of Google’s effort to make its different AI services easier to find and use together.

The cloud-computer feature allows the tool to carry out coding tasks in a separate, protected online environment. This matters because Google is competing with other technology companies to offer AI systems that can not only answer questions but also help complete more practical work.
