Google Photos adds a new AI ‘Video Remix’ tool

TechCrunch · 1 month ago

Google has announced "Video Remix", a new tool in Google Photos that uses artificial intelligence to edit and transform videos within seconds. Powered by Google's recently released Gemini Omni model, the feature lets users apply effects such as cinematic relighting, background swaps and artistic styles with only a few taps. The launch reflects Google's broader effort to embed generative AI into its consumer apps and to keep users within its ecosystem, as it competes with rivals including Apple, OpenAI and Adobe.

Accessed via the "Create" tab, Video Remix can brighten dark clips, replace plain backgrounds and apply styles such as watercolour, sketchbook and oil painting effects. It began rolling out on 8 July 2026 to eligible Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers across 15 countries, including the US, India, Brazil, Japan and South Korea. The tool is the latest in a series of AI additions to Google Photos, which recently gained touch-up tools for subtle fixes and a feature that creates a digital wardrobe for trying on outfits virtually.
