## Key points

- Schools can keep Google Search while disabling Gemini apps.
- Turning on Search also means accepting its AI features.
- Google offers no AI-free version of Search for schools.

## Summary

Google says schools will be able to disable its Gemini apps while keeping Google Search available, clarifying confusion over a new policy for student accounts. However, schools that enable Search will also have to accept its AI features, leaving them unable to offer students Google’s web search without AI.

Under the policy, schools can choose to turn on Google’s AI tools, including Search, or leave them off; Search can use standard AI features or a Guided Learning mode designed to give answers less readily. Google says the policy has not changed, but its earlier explanations were unclear. The article notes that Google sees AI as part of Search’s future, while alternatives may have less comprehensive web indexes; a court-ordered limited sharing of Google’s index could eventually help competitors.
