Gotta catch ’em all! Moment brothers steal £62,000 of Pokémon cards from shop before they themselves were caught by detectives
Two brothers, Shane Johnson, 37, and Keith Johnson, 33, were caught on CCTV stealing more than £62,000 worth of Pokémon cards during a break-in at Celestial Collectables, a gaming shop in Warrington, Cheshire, on 8 April. The case matters as part of a wider spree of targeted burglaries on high-value Pokémon cards, which have been described as "more valuable than gold" as the franchise marks its 30th anniversary.
Wearing face masks and tracksuits, the pair used a crowbar to break in, smashed glass display cabinets and swept trading cards, slabs, packs and booster boxes into a large carrier bag during a raid lasting over four minutes. They caused extensive damage to the door, counter and cabinets, leaving co-owner Chris Grundy, 30, "devastated" and the shop "destroyed". Keith Johnson was sentenced to 29 months' imprisonment, while Shane Johnson is due to be sentenced on 31 July.
