## Key points

- Grace Tame condemned political spin around the alleged attack.
- Helen Haines lost both legs and remains critically but stably ill.
- MPs have raised concerns about threats and political security.

## Summary

Grace Tame criticised Australians who, she said, used the alleged attack on independent MP Helen Haines to promote political agendas and conspiracy theories. She urged people to focus on compassion, accountability and justice, saying Haines was a person rather than a vehicle for public debate.

Haines, 65, was allegedly struck several times by a Toyota LandCruiser outside her office in Wangaratta on Monday and has lost both legs; she remains in a critical but stable condition. Victorian MP Georgie Purcell and One Nation leader Pauline Hanson also described threats against politicians, prompting calls to review security arrangements ahead of Victoria’s state election next month.
